Heavenly Hills has a lasting legacy of service and faith which grows as each new camper steps onto camp grounds and enters into our story. Here you will discover this legacy's humble beginnings and our camp's statements of faith.
A Christian Camp is Born
On October 9, 1954, Articles of Incorporation were filed and Secret Town Christian Service Camp came into existence. A collection of independent Christian Churches and Churches of Christ came together to form the organization that in 1960 changed its name to Northern California Christian Service Camp. In October 1965 they purchased the property just outside of Twain Harte, CA ( a quaint summer and winter vacation community found between the oak forest of the California foothills and the mixed pine and fir forest of the Sierra Nevada Mountains) and in September of 1966 the first camp was held at the Twain Harte property. Two years later a contest was held to name the camp and in October 1968 a winner was selected. Since then the camp has been known as Heavenly Hills Christian Camp.
The early mission of the camp was simply to be a gathering place for area restoration heritage churches. The camp sessions were intended to minister to children and families supplementing what was happening in the local congregation. The first several years of camps were family camps. Families slept in tents and trailers doing their own cooking and cleaning. The first youth camp took place in the summer of 1968 with ten boys and eleven girls. There was no well and water was pumped from a nearby spring up to an A-frame cabin. In the 1970's the camp continued to expand and evolve. Soon Heavenly Hills was bustling with family camps, high school camps, junior high camps and even camps for the youngest of campers. In 1975 the camp hosted its largest single gathering when over 450 gathered at Heavenly Hills for a family camp.
Throughout the years Heavenly Hills continued to find innovative ways to be a place of transformation for churches and campers. The camp, existing at one time only to serve church groups within the restoration movement, began hosting churches in Northern California from various denominations and backgrounds. Though Heavenly Hills continues to plan and host it's own camps and retreats it has been blessed to be a gathering place for churches throughout Northern California. This convergence of the body of Christ continues to breathe fresh life into HHCC and the camp, after almost 50 years, still shines as a beacon of light in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Heavenly Hills Christian Camp has been and continues to be a place that hosts the Presence of God and seeks to bring its campers into a life changing encounter with Jesus.
